Following the death of her mother in 1867, an 18-year-old Frances was now the head of a family of four younger siblings. Her main writing talent was combining realistic detail of working-class life with a romantic plot. Her first novel was published in 1877; That Lass o' Lowrie's was a story of Lancashire life.
