本书的编写以“纸上工艺记录片”的形式，以图像、文字采访、画外评论的手法真实记载传统木工匠们的工作状态，凸显每一位工匠师傅自身独特的制造工艺，展现每一位工匠师傅按照自身使用习惯符合自身人体工学的与手掌契合度极高的定制工具，这些工具也是每一位工匠师傅历经一复一日的实践操作而不断加以改良、改的优化结果，从这些工具可以看到师承关系一脉相传的中国传统木作技艺不断演的缩影与记忆。
