¥68.57
Picking up from where A Seaside Practice left off, in Going Loco Dr Tom takes time out from the surgery for stints as a medical researcher and reporter, describing his travels from Rio to Miami, Vienna to Buenos Aires. Part memoir, part travelogue, Going Loco takes us on a journey around the medical world, from the challenge of malaria and sleeping sickness in up-country Kenya to the stress of smuggling beagle dogs into Amsterdam. We meet impossible patients, brave souls, a few mad doctors, and even the odd international criminal and spy on the way, yet still enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Scottish Islands and Highlands as we do so.
60s Singapore
60s Singapore
Parsons, P J
¥44.05
A not too serious look at life in a Singapore undergoing the transition from a long-established British colony to an independent state. This is seen through the eyes of a young family transported from London suburbia to the totally different environment of the Far East. This collection of anecdotes, experiences and memories reflects the differences in lifestyle and customs. The growth of the tourist industry and the modernisation of many parts of Singapore, including offshore islands, have made many of these experiences impossible today and those of a nostalgic nature, and with experience of the past and present Singapore, may regret the diminishment of the 'flavour of the East' as a result of the invasion of the tourist tribes.

Tonnies, Mac
¥73.48
Posthuman Blues, Vol. I is first volume of the edited version of the popular weblog maintained by author Mac Tonnies from 2003 until his tragic death in 2009. Tonnies' blog was a pastiche of his original fiction, reflections on his day-to-day life, trenchant observations of current events, and thoughts on an eclectic range of material he culled from the Internet. What resulted was a remarkably broad portrait of a thoughtful man and the complex times in which he lived, rendered with intelligence, imagination, and a wickedly absurdist sense of humor.

The Philosophy of Style
Herbert Spencer
¥8.09
Classic essay, first published in 1852. According to Wikipedia: "Herbert Spencer (27 April 1820 – 8 December 1903) was an English philosopher, prominent classical liberal political theorist, and sociological theorist of the Victorian era. Spencer developed an all-embracing conception of evolution as the progressive development of the physical world, biological organisms, the human mind, and human culture and societies. As a polymath, he contributed to a wide range of subjects, including ethics, religion, anthropology, economics, political theory, philosophy, biology, sociology, and psychology. During his lifetime he achieved tremendous authority, mainly in English-speaking academia. In 1902 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Indeed, in Great Britain and the United States at "one time Spencer's disciples had not blushed to compare him with Aristotle!" He is best known for coining the concept "survival of the fittest," which he did in Principles of Biology (1864), after reading Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. This term strongly suggests natural selection, yet as Spencer extended evolution into realms of sociology and ethics, he made use of Lamarckism rather than natural selection."
