Girl Called Jake
Girl Called Jake
Grigor, Iain Fraser
¥19.52
Two natives, one b*stard and a mighty bog... A Girl Called Jake draws on a translation from a hitherto secret archive to tell the story of a gigantic narcotics plant that's built upon a mighty bog. But in a strange and distant land, a rising for liberty is crushed with vicious and unparalleled violence. And in the country of the book's principal action an agitation grows - and grows. For here too is a disturbing spirit of national sentiment. And here too a rising - a strictly unconstitutional affair!!! - takes place. So in the giant plant is fought once more one of the great battles of classical antiquity. But in the very moment of victory - defeat! For just as the cops' big bust gets under way - the whole plant tilts and flips, and sinks forever in its mighty bog: and everything goes back to the good old way that it was. With an introduction: and, by the translator, an afterword.

This novel is the second in a projected five-part series called The Second British Protectorate - a series of high-concept, story-driven commercial fictions from the viewpoint of alternate history, supposing a sovietised post-war Britain modelled on Cromwell's 17th century Protectorate. The themes are both historical and modern. For instance - what shape would a popular rising against such a state have taken? Who would have collaborated with the regime - who might have resisted - and who might have loafed on the leathered benches of least resistance? What would the state's religious policy have been? Might that policy have forced the merger of the churches of Scotland and England? Might the religious and messianic mania of the 17th century have returned? Might it have been believed that Jesus had come (back) to England? Might George VI have gone to the scaffold as Charles I had - dead by winter axe in London's Whitehall? What role would the great lawyers of the land and their sacred notions of constitutionality and amour-propre (not to mention the school-fees) have had in all of this? What about civil liberties, and clear and present dangers to the state? What about the asymmetric distribution of lethal capacities for oppression and resistance? What about the nature of religious identity as the ideology of that resistance? What role might cocaine have played in a ruined command-economy with a worthless currency? Might the Americans have smuggled it into Britain in huge quantities as a way of funding democratic terrorism? The Glenfinnan Manuscript (the lass with the siller buckle) - as the churches of Scotland and England are forced to merge, a band of outlaw Daniels murder the Archbishop of Canterbury in the very centre of Edinburgh, and escape with six tons of English (or British) gold. But - where is that gold now?

With Wolfe in Canada

Henty, G. A.

This book tells the story of James Walsham, who left England as a young man in 1755 and finds himself in the French and Indian War.From the author:In the present volume I have endeavoured to give the details of the principal events in a struggle whose importance can hardly be overrated. At its commencement the English occupied a mere patch of land on the eastern seaboard of America, hemmed in on all sides by the French, who occupied not only Canada in the north and Louisiana in the south, but possessed a chain of posts connecting them, so cutting off the English from all access to the vast countries of the west. On the issues of that struggle depended not only the destiny of Canada, but of the whole of North America and, to a large extent, that of the two mother countries. When the contest began, the chances of France becoming the great colonizing empire of the world were as good as those of England. Not only did she hold far larger territories in America than did England, but she had rich colonies in the West Indies, where the flag of England was at that time hardly represented, and her prospects in India were better than our own. At that time, too, she disputed with us on equal terms the empire of the sea.The loss of her North American provinces turned the scale. With the monopoly of such a market, the commerce of England increased enormously, and with her commerce her wealth and power of extension, while the power of France was proportionately crippled. It is true that, in time, the North American colonies, with the exception of Canada, broke away from their connection with the old country; but they still remained English, still continued to be the best market for our goods and manufactures. Never was the short-sightedness of human beings shown more distinctly, than when France wasted her strength and treasure in a sterile contest on the continent of Europe, and permitted, with scarce an effort, her North American colonies to be torn from her. All the historical details of the war have been drawn from the excellent work entitled Montcalm and Wolfe, by Mr. Francis Parkman, and from the detailed history of the Louisbourg and Quebec expeditions, by Major Knox, who served under Generals Amherst and Wolfe.

Sherlock Holmes in Advertising
Sherlock Holmes in Advertising
Field, Amanda J
¥19.52
This fascinating book explores the way that Sherlock Holmes has been appropriated by British businesses to advertise everything from carpets and tyres, to honey and whisky. Somerset Maugham believed that Holmes had survived so long in the public imagination because Arthur Conan Doyle had hammered the detective's idiosyncracies into the minds of his readers with 'the same pertinacity as the great advertisers use to proclaim the merits of their soap, beer or cigarettes'. Linking Holmes with consumer products in this way implies that the detective was becoming a 'brand' in his own right. But if he was a brand, then what values did he portray? Why would advertisers want to associate those values with their own products - even if those products had, on the face of it, nothing whatsoever to do with Sherlock Holmes? And how did they go about it? The book draws on a treasure-trove of advertisements in the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection - Richard Lancelyn Green Bequest at Portsmouth Museum.

Assignment Yggdrasil
Dubey, Christopher James
¥19.52
Originally published by Chipmunkapublishing, and now thoroughly revised, Assignment Yggdrasil is a groundbreaking novel about how far governments can go in the fight against bioterrorism. Set during the presidency of George W. Bush and the height of the War on Terror, the United States Department of Defense has secretly garnered intelligence confirming that, within a decade, groups intent on mass murder will possess bioweaponry capable of annihilating either the USA...or the entire human species. A special operation, Assignment Yggdrasil, has begun in an attempt to avert the so-called 'Ragnarok,' doomsday. Although they appear human, subjects have been genetically converted from human to transhuman, given immunity to all biological pathogens known to infect humans, as well as special abilities from other species. Only the new species, the transhuman, is predicted to survive the bioterrorist Ragnarok. The government has staked its bets on these transhumans, hoping they will rebuild American democracy in the resulting chaos. Yet the government is performing this transhumanism covertly, infecting thousands of citizens with the virus through their food, drink, and medicine. Some test subjects have died unwittingly under experimentation and the government is hiding everything. An equally furtive resistance has formed, led by various radical groups who dispute the bioethics of the operation. In a precarious showdown with the government, the rebels question whether the removal of humanity is really a gift and if the end justifies the means.

What do you do if you want your Charity Ball to go without a hitch? You get Saskia and Saskia to organise it for you. The Ball itself will go without a hitch (probably) but getting there is far from straightforward. Yet another person discovers that the Saskias and the SuperTwins are the same people, but her response to the revelation surprises the girls. Sir James gets himself into a spot of bother, but is easily extracted by the twins, who then have to work quite hard to preserve their secret. Saskia discovers she has a maternal instinct, despite not really being a girl, which gives her a lot to think about. Having super powers AND being able to move in time proves useful when the plant next door is devastated by a huge explosion, the girls end up doing the whole day twice! Moving in time is getting to be routine as the girls are shifted back to 1757 to fix a problem with the timeline. A visit to the Russian plant sees Saskia changing to be James in case he gets shot, which is fine until this actually happens - and Saskia doesn't have super powers while she's being James. The girls are getting used to moving in time, but encounter a problem when time itself goes screwy and they get shunted sideways into a reality that has no future and no real past.
