L'auteur se livre à une féroce satire de la société de son temps et dénonce la médiocrité des élites, la dégénérescence de la noblesse et la corruption des politiciens.

L'autore stesso lo definisce come il romanzo "più amaro di tutti, profondamente umoristico, di scomposizione della vita". Il protagonista Vitangelo Moscarda, infatti, può essere considerato come uno dei personaggi più complessi del mondo pirandelliano, e sicuramente quello con maggior autoconsapevolezza. Dal punto di vista formale, stilistico, si può notare la forte inclinazione al monologo del soggetto, che molto spesso si rivolge al lettore ponendogli interrogativi e problemi in modo da coinvolgerlo direttamente nella vicenda, il cui significato è senza dubbio di portata universale. A dispetto della sua lunga gestazione, l'opera non è né frammentaria né disorganizzata; al contrario, può essere considerata come l'apice della carriera dell'autore e della sua tensione narrativa.

Ces relations entre parents et enfants ne sont pas toujours recommandables... il arrive même qu'elles soient néfastes. Ajoutez à cela que j'étais fils unique... et la plupart des enfants qui se trouvent dans mon cas ne re?oivent pas une éducation normale. En les élevant, les parents songent trop à eux-mêmes... Cela n'est pas bon. Je n'étais ni g?té, ni aigri (deux défauts qui guettent tous les enfants uniques), mais mon système nerveux avait été ébranlé prématurément. D'ailleurs, en général, ma santé laissait fort à désirer : j'avais hérité cela de ma mère, à qui je ressemblais beaucoup, à tous les points de vue.

Puis le roman oblique vers le thème du savant fou, dont les créations échappent à son contr?le et sont à l'origine de désastres... De plus nous découvrons que M. No?l s'appelle en réalité Baloo et est amoureux fou, sans espoir, de la jolie fille... Un roman éclectique, qui part un peu dans tous les sens, comme cela arrivait parfois avec les feuilletons écrits au jour le jour, mais qui nous offre un certain nombre d'épisode complètement délirants qui valent la peine d'être lus.
