Life on the Run
¥53.86
This is the story of one athlete of the 20th century and a record of the changing world of athletics during that period. It has been written because of the vast changes in sport, and athletics in particular, over a period of fifty or more years. There have been many changes but very few have brought about higher standards. Stanley Edward Eldon was born in the Royal Borough of Windsor on 1st May 1936. He grew up in Windsor during the Second World War, and during his time at Windsor County Boys' School he started his athletics career, running 880 yards and cross-country races. On leaving school he joined the Berkshire Constabulary as one of its first police cadets before his National Service call-up where he served in the Royal Military Police and became Army 3 mile champion. As a young runner from the age of sixteen years, he was ranked in the first three in the country at the one mile, and progressed by the time he was twenty years old to two World Best Performances for a junior at the 3 miles and 6 miles. After Military Service he rejoined the Berkshire Police as a constable where he further progressed his running career, including winning AAA Championships at both 3 and 6 miles; British records at 5 and 6 miles, as well as the 10,000 metres and International Cross-Country Champion (the forerunner of what are now the World Championships). He also won many international races on the track at various distances, as well as setting records in many road races. In 1961 he left the police and was the first athlete to start a retail sports business under his own name, and ran a successful sports business for over twenty-five years, which included introducing the first specialist road running shoes in this country. In 1983 he was instrumental in setting up the Reading Half Marathon, which for many years was, and still is, one of the largest and most successful events of its kind in the country. This 'hobby' eventually took over his life and more similar event organisation followed.
King of Cappielow
¥73.48
The King of Cappielow, with a fitting Foreword by Sir Alex Ferguson CBE, is a tribute to the much-loved Scottish footballing legend, Andy Ritchie. He was born in Glasgow in 1956 and developed a passion for football from a young age. As a teenager he went for trials with several English clubs, but in the end joined Celtic in 1971 at the age of 15, signing professional forms in 1973. In 1976, after one too many alleged disputes with manager, Jock Stein, he became part of a transfer deal, moving to Greenock Morton in exchange for their goalkeeper, Roy Baines. And thus, for the next seven years, Andy Ritchie built his reputation as the 'King of Cappielow'. Adored by the fans, but attracting less regal labels by the media, such as the 'Idle Idol' and the 'Ambling Alp', due to his large build and less than energetic footballing style, Ritchie proved his incredible ball skills time after time, netting 133 goals in 246 matches and achieving the honour of top goalscorer in the Premier League for three consecutive years. He became renowned for his ability to curl the ball into the net from free kicks, particularly corners, an expertise he purportedly developed from watching the Brazilians training for the 1974 World Cup, even though he sadly never got to play for Scotland. On leaving Morton, Andy Ritchie played briefly for Motherwell and was player/manager at Albion Rovers for a season before retiring from football in 1985, aged 28. The call of Scotland and football ever strong, he eventually returned to his roots from a management position at the Barbican in London and, after some time as a football scout, he took on his current role of SPL delegate/match observer. Although he received the coveted Football Writers' Player of the Year award in 1979, he is yet to be inducted into the Scotland Hall of Fame. Maybe with this publication his time for full recognition will come.
Life of Brian Honour
¥73.48
Brian Honour was born in the former pit village of Horden, County Durham, and his passion from a young age was always to become a professional footballer. Despite the odds and many setbacks, that's exactly what he achieved, giving his all to the game and earning respect from fans, fellow players and the media alike. Many believed his skills would clinch him a place with a Premiership side and, although this was never to be, he is rightly considered a legend and The Life of Brian is a fitting tribute to the man who was affectionately dubbed 'Mr Hartlepool United'. Brian first became involved in football at the age of four, when Sir Stanley Matthews visited his home. He subsequently signed Schoolboy forms for Aston Villa, where he stayed for three years before being rejected as being too small. He then went for a trial at Darlington and signed as an apprentice, and in 1982, at the age of 18, he obtained a full professional contract. However, his dreams were soon shattered for a second time, when again he was told he was too small by the former Tottenham Hotspur and England fullback Cyril Knowles, then the Darlington manager. Brian moved into non-League football with Peterlee Newtown, before being plucked from the mist at Tow Law by Billy Horner, the Hartlepool United manager. He would stay at the Victoria Ground for almost 11 years as a player before persistent injury forced him to retire. He was voted the supporters' Player of the Season three times and was a member of the promotion-winning side of 1991. He has proved to be an excellent and inspiring youth coach, and spells in non-League football with Durham City, Horden Colliery Welfare and Bishop Auckland (twice) have run in tandem with his business 'The Brian Honour Football School'.

Stockholm
¥86.62
Situated on Lake Malaren on one of the world s most beautiful harbours, Stockholm has set the benchmark for civilized city-living since the time of the Vikings. Its medieval regal period saw the Vasa dynasty turn a small town in the shadow of Uppsala into the capital city of a dominant power in Europe and a major trading port. In the Napoleonic era Stockholm readjusted its priorities to establish itself as a centre of innovation, technical and social. While the city has suffered more than its fair share of disasters, Stockholm s cultural and commercial elite transformed it into a community which welcomed innovation and spread the fruits of its achievements far beyond its borders. From its celebrated Old Town, dating from the Middle Ages, to its Art Nouveau and modern quarters, Stockholm is a city rich in museums, theatres and landmarks. Tony Griffiths explores the Swedish capital, old and new, revealing a city of unexpected contradictions. CITY OF POWER, INTRIGUE AND MURDER: Gustav Vasa, Queen Christina and Voltaire; murder at a Masked Ball, Olaf Palme s assassination; Lindh, social democracy and armed neutrality; the rights of women and the impact of immigration CITY OF SCIENTISTS AND INVENTORS: Linnaeus and Nobel; Ericsson and new technology; Laval, Wenner-Gren and Kamprad. Beyond Schizophrenia:Michael's Journey
¥65.99
What would you do if your child suffered with something so severe it affected every aspect of his life? Susie Dunham, Midwestern mom and former nurse, never suspected her son Michael was anything but a typical college student with big dreams until he developed schizophrenia shortly after his 21st birthday. The Dunham family quickly becomes immersed in the nightmare world of mental illness in America: psychiatric wards, a seemingly indifferent nursing staff, and the trial-and-error world of psychotropic meds. Michael's ultimate recovery and remission comes with plenty of traumatic incidents involving both ignorance and stigma, but his courage and quest for dignity will inspire all readers. "Susie Dunham's heroic, heart-rending story is a beacon of light in the darkness of insanity. It shows that recovery is hard-won but possible for people who develop schizophrenia, despite a media that sensationalizes them, a society that shuns them, and a dysfunctional mental healthcare system that fails them miserably." --Patrick Tracey, author of Stalking Irish Madness: Searching for the Roots of My Family's Schizophrenia "Every person in a leadership position needs to take the time to read this moving story of triumph over adversity." --State Representative John Adams, Ohio House Minority Whip "The fact that Michael bravely fought this disease, picked up the pieces and moved beyond it, should give others hope that one day schizophrenia will be seen as a treatable disease with no stigma attached." --Sharon Goldberg, News & Reviews Editor,"NYC Voices": A Journal for Mental Health Advocacy "Beyond Schizophrenia: Michael's Journey is a book that I couldn't put down. The story of Michael's parents Susie and Mark who support their son both in good times and bad really touched me. It’s one of the words no woman ever wants to hear, because it signifies a significant shift in a her life. I’m talking about menopause. The changes that take place during menopause can be confusing at best, and very upsetting at worst. That’s why it’s important to learn as much as you can about this natural process, instead of trying to ignore it or hide from it. When you take the time to understand exactly what’s happening to your body, you’re taking control of the situation. What seems like a completely random set of aches and ailments becomes a clear set of symptoms that you can predict and actually deal with. Am I too young for menopause? But did you know that it could happen to you as early as age 30? Do you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, covered in a cold sweat? Are you feeling happy and bright one second, and then all of a sudden hit with a wave of sadness or anger? Maybe you’re having trouble controlling your bladder? As embarrassing as it all might seem, these are all actually completely normal occurrences ?for women in their 40’s and 50’s, as these are just a few of the symptoms that come with the early stages of menopause, which is known as perimenopause. There is not specific, exact time when a women is guaranteed to enter perimenopause. It happens at different times for different people. That’s why it’s so important to be aware of all the signs of menopause, otherwise you’re giving up control of your own health. Menopause can take place anywhere between age 30 and age 60, which is a pretty big gap. That’s why it’s so important to understand what is really going on during menopause, because you really never know when it could start. As you get older, we can start experiencing symptoms that are similar to those of menopause—like mood swings, tiredness, and irregular periods—without it actually being menopause. “Coping with Menopause: What women in their lives really need to know ” offers some great information to help you understand these changes, whenever they start to happen. Even though menopause is a natural process that happens to all of us, there’s still a few things that you need to keep an eye on to make sure that everything is happening the way it should. If you just write it off as “part of getting older,” then you could end up experiencing an increased risk of heart disease, a dangerous loss in bone density, or even a higher rate of bladder infections. Make sure you know what’s happening to your body, so you can stay healthy at any age.
Got Bipolar?:An Insider's Guide to Managing Life Effectively
¥40.79
Marshal the Skills and Resources You Need to Live Your Best Life! This book is about how to recover from bipolar disorder, or at least how to attempt to recover from it. Sufferers will be briefly introduced to new coping skills including: emotional regulation, method acting, empathy development and relaxation. In order to get the most out of this book, you’ll need to develop your own strategies, based on the recommendations of this book.“In Got Bipolar?, Zotti offers unique insights based on his personal experience of coming to terms with his own bipolar condition. Applying method acting as an emotional regulation tool mirrors the work of Marsha Linehan and her concept of ‘opposite action to the emotion’, a tool long recognized as effective in regulating emotions. Additionally, his focus on developing hobbies and interests in one’s life also reflects Linehan’s emphasis on creating a life worth living through the pursuit of meaningful activities. Zotti’s book will, no doubt, provide an invaluable guide for sufferers of bipolar disorder and I highly recommend it.” --Paul Corcoran, Clinical Psychologist, Moving Forward“If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BPD), Got Bipolar? is a good place to start to try to make sense of it all. Topics include self-care, medications, coping skills and responding to someone in crisis. Zotti has lived with BPD most of his life, so he has walked the talk. The messages are of hope, loving yourself throughout this process and, if you are looking for help with a loved one, recognizing that the person is more than just this illness.” -- Judy Wright, mental health patient advocate“Got Bipolar? offers a framework for the sufferer in need of skills to overcome symptoms. Zotti personally uses method acting as a coping skill to reverse mood states. Even a smile has the power to shift a low mood. He covers the basics, but it is up to the readers to increase their knowledge of emotional regulation, empathy development, relaxation techniques and other coping skills. This book is a really good primer for anyone suffering from Bipolar Disorder. -- Lewis Weir, BSWLearn more about the author at www.lhpress.com/authors/alfredo-zotti
Looking Through the Trauma Lens
¥24.44
I developed renewed faith in the power of psychotherapy after I attended a Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) course in 2011. It opened many doors for me as I began to understand the impact of previously overlooked, objectively minor traumatic incidents on psychological disorders and problems. This article is about the application of this powerful tool over the entire spectrum of psychological problems and disorders and how this brings about impressive and permanent change. The optimal use of this tool in psychotherapy requires a shift in epistemology in which we begin to view mental health through a trauma lens. The definition of psychological trauma can vary. From a TIR perspective, trauma can be defined as any incident that had a negative physical or emotional impact on an individual. This is a very subjective issue as the something could be perceived as traumatic by one individual, but as commonplace and harmless by another. The important thing is the emotional and physical impact the incident had on the individual, its subjective impact. The reason it is so important to view trauma in the broadest way possible is because it explains the chronic mood states of our clients as well as how subconscious intentions and automatic emotional responses affect their current lives. These will be explained below. Traumatic incidents, when understood in the broadest sense possible, have a massive effect on our neurobiology, emotional states and behavioral patterns. Therefore, they can be seen as the driving force behind almost all psychological problems and disorders. When I say traumatic incidents "in the broadest sense possible," I refer to the everyday incidents of trauma that are objectively perceived as minor, such as an embarrassing comment by a teacher, conflict with a friend, breaking your mother's expensive vase, etc. It involves an understanding of how the emotional knocks we take on a daily basis affect our neurobiology and continue to have an impact on us in later life. The understanding of subconscious intentions, automatic emotional reactions and responses and chronic mood states are so crucial when it comes to looking at mental health through a trauma lens. Minor and major psychological and physical trauma involves a complex description of the effects on the brain. This article includes detailed case studies including specific incidents such as birth trauma and jealousy and rage. We will look in detail at how trauma results in Goleman's "Amygdala Hijacking" and how we can help the client break destructive cycles. I also explain why sheer willpower is insufficient to change behavior in the face of traumatic restimulation. Additionally, the article explains how TIR avoids re-traumatization even as clients revisit past incidents.
