Mrs Arbuthnot and Mrs Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club, but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading a newspaper advertisement for a small medieval Italian castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs Fisher and the stunning, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

Mansfield's Bliss, and Other Stories, published in 1920, secured the author's literary reputation. While readers and critics at the time generally lauded the short fiction collection, a few reviewers objected to its controversial subject matter - infidelities, discussions of sexuality, cruel and superficial characters. Today "Bliss" is one of Mansfield's most frequently anthologized stories and still resonates with modern readers.

This tale of scientific rejuvenation was the number one best seller of 1923. The story centers on the relationship between thirty-four year old columnist Lee Clavering, and Mary Zattiany, a 58 year old woman who, through modern science, has regained her youth. The story takes place within New York’s high society and there is much criticism of both the older and younger generations in the 1920s. The older generation is argued to be unreasonably caught up in convention while the younger generation is shown as being too eager to flout their straying from those same conventions.

In the vaulted Gothic towers of Notre-Dame lives Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bellringer. Mocked and shunned for his appearance, he is pitied only by Esmerelda, a beautiful gypsy dancer to whom he becomes completely devoted. Esmerelda, however, has also attracted the attention of the sinister archdeacon Claude Frollo, and when she rejects his lecherous approaches, Frollo hatches a plot to destroy her that only Quasimodo can prevent. Victor Hugo's sensational, evocative novel brings life to the medieval Paris he loved, and mourns its passing in one of the greatest historical romances of the nineteenth century.

William Clark Russell was an English writer best known for his nautical novels. At the age of 13 Russell joined the Merchant Navy, serving for eight years. The hardships of life at sea permanently damaged his health, but provided him with material for a career as a writer. He wrote short stories, press articles, historical essays, biographies and a book of verse, but was best known for his novels, most of which were about life at sea. He maintained a parallel career as a journalist, principally as a columnist on nautical subjects for The Daily Telegraph. Russell campaigned for better conditions for merchant seamen, and his work influenced reforms passed by Parliament to prevent unscrupulous ship-owners from exploiting their crews. His influence in this respect was acknowledged by the future King George V. Among Russell's other contemporary admirers were Herman Melville and Algernon Swinburne.

A Fighting Man of Mars is the seventh book in the Mars series, originally published in six-parts in Blue Book Magazine, May to September 1930. It is an interesting and exciting novel filled with futuristic scientific inventions. There are five enemy cities or lands encountered in this tale with five wonderfully drawn villains: Xanator with the green men and white apes; Tjanath with Haj Osis and “The Death”; Ghasta with Ghron the “spider”; Jhama with Phor Tak the mad scientist; and U-Gor with the cannibals. It is a high adventure in the best tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

In Desert and Wilderness is a popular novel for young people by Polish author and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Henryk Sienkiewicz, written in 1912. It is in fact the author's only novel written for children. It tells the story of two young friends, Sta? Tarkowski and Nel Rawlison, kidnapped by the rebels during Mahdi's rebellion in Sudan. It was adapted to cinema in 1973 and 2001.

Hastiado de la vida rural, entro por oposicion en el Cuerpo de Sanidad Militar. Su primer destino fue Sevilla, donde comenzo su actividad periodistica que ya habia intentado en Madrid. De Sevilla paso a Trubia, como medico de la fabrica de armas. Anos despues marcho voluntario a unas Filipinas en plena rebelion. Destinado como medico en Fuerte Victoria, en realidad un destacamento de prisioneros tagalos, estuvo a punto de perder la vida durante una escaramuza. Los sublevados le asestaron no menos de siete machetazos, dejandolo por muerto. Trigo, sin embargo, consiguio huir a campo traves, en espantosas condiciones. Con una mano inutilizada, fue repatriado como mutilado de guerra, con el grado de teniente coronel. La prensa le recibio como ?el heroe de Fuerte Victoria? y llego a ser propuesto para la Cruz Laureada de San Fernando.
