禅宗是汉传佛教的主要宗派之一， 是以禅定作为佛教全部修习而得名。 禅宗 起始于菩提达摩， 盛行于六祖惠能， 在中晚唐之后成为汉传佛教的主要流派， 是 汉传佛教的标志象征。 它的核心思想是： “不立文字， 教外别传； 直指人心， 见性成佛”。 意思是通 过我们自身的实践， 从日常生活中直掌握真理和规律， 后达到真正认识自我。 禅宗的这个 “禅” 字由梵文 “禅那” 音译而来， 意为 “静虑”、 “思维修”、 “定慧均” 等， 它是指通过精神的集中， 再有层次的冥想过程。 它是佛教很重 要而且基本的修行方法， 被称为三无漏学之一。 但是， 禅宗所谓的禅并不是指某 一种特定的修行方法， 而是指领悟到本性的一种状态。 其实， 禅来自于生活， 是 长期生活积累的精神顿悟， 带有生命的本真， 是不受知识约束的。 禅宗相传是印度菩提达摩所创立， 下传二祖慧可、 三祖僧璨、 四祖道信、 五 祖弘忍、 六祖慧能等， 此时禅宗得到了大力弘扬， 便分成了北宗神秀、 南宗慧能 两大流派， 因此称为 “南能北秀”。 北宗神秀以 《楞伽经》 的思想作为禅法的要旨， 主张通过坐禅 “息想” 和 “摄心”， 摒弃人间一切情欲和对世界万物所持有的生灭、 有无、 凡圣、 前后等差 别观念， 达到与 “实相” 或 “真如” 相契合的精神境界。 北宗相传数代后， 渐渐走向了衰落。 南宗由六祖惠能创立并弘传的禅宗流派， 因初流行于中国南方地区， 与当 时流传于北方神秀一系的北宗相区别而得名。 后来南宗逐渐取代了北宗地位， 成 为了中国禅宗的主流。 因此， 后世所说的禅宗， 实际上主要指惠能所创立的南 宗禅。
