《时间机器》始终以人称进行叙事,因此读者始终以接近受述者的地位存在,两者之间的心理距离始终得到弱化。值得注意的是,这其中也存在一个级次问题,即读者先听到叙述者“我”的叙述声音,接着听到时间旅行家的叙述声音,后又听到“我”的叙述声音。这个级次的转换是借助无名叙述者“我”来实现的。“我”的人称叙述明显意味着时间旅行家的神奇经历他是亲耳所闻,也就是说,他当时是“在场”的,而这位“牵涉其中的叙述者”的在场,使得读者得以跟随他的叙述如同身临时间旅行家家中。从这个意义上讲,无名叙述者“我”构成读者和时间旅行家发生关系的桥梁,正是借助这位不知名的“我”,时间旅行家的叙述声音有了言说向度,读者参与意识或曰“在场”意识得到进一步强化,对时间旅行家的讲述也就更有可能感同身受。同时,两位叙述者叙述过程中明显的自我意识又使作为听者的读者保持自由超然的审美心态和阅读情绪。“我”在追叙过程中对自我身份始终未透露,然而这些个人基本信息(如姓名,年龄和职业等)的模糊并未削弱其叙述的可信度,这些信息的不明反而造成了叙事上的“阐释空缺”,在激发读者阅读兴趣的同时给读者留下了广阔的臆想空间。
