Memoirs from Mrs. Hudson's Kitchen
Heyman-Marsaw, Wendy
¥58.76
Mrs. Hudson is possibly the most famous landlady in literature. Presiding over the comings and goings at 221B Baker Street, she saw many clients, villains and Baker Street Irregulars during the tenancy of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. This series of columns, thoughts, recipes and memoirs are from a long-running column in the Sherlockian journal Canadian Holmes. In it the author, Wendy Heyman-Marsaw, puts herself in Mrs. Hudson's shoes, up and down the 17 steps, and recounts not only the time and era but the food, dining and eating habits of Victorian England. This book explores the meals Mrs. Hudson would have prepared and served her two famous lodgers, what food they would have had while on rail journeys or eaten at hotels around London or inns around England. You will also learn about Mrs. Hudson herself, her husband and even her views towards women's roles and rights in Victorian times. With many illustrations from the Strand Magazine, readers will get a rare peek inside Victorian life.

Write Your Self has been written with this in mind: you will keep a journal, but it is structured and directed, and all the writing leads to more understanding of you. Whether you simply treat this book as a different kind of journal, or whether you use it as a basis for creative writing, the result will be a new access to your own words and to your personal development as an individual.

Punter, Gordon

Does malevolence exist beyond the grave? An extract from the diary of Eleanor Harmsworth, governess at Waldegrave Hall, dated Wednesday 11 October 1899: At first, I was utterly transfixed, but as I summoned the courage to move, so the presence hurriedly glided past me and, similar to a heated knife slicing through a block of cold butter, went straight through the closed door of my bedchamber and disappeared. If ever an event were created to determine the mettle of an individual, then exposing a person to a chilling spectacle such as this would surely test the nerve of any mortal. In this extraordinary novel, author Gordon Punter, delivers a story about courage, risk, change and hope, and a love that never dies.

Saskia
Saskia
Berry, Ian
¥19.52
Richie is falling, he's certain to be killed as he hits the bottom of the quarry he's tumbled over the edge of. His life is saved by the intervention of a disembodied being he eventually comes to call a Guardian of Reality. But there's a snag. The voice gives him super powers, so he isn't hurt by the fall. Trouble is, it isn't super powers like Superman, it's super powers like Supergirl, which comes as a bit of a shock as you might imagine. Richie decides to put up with being a girl, having super powers does have the odd advantage. He calls himself Saskia and everything is fine - until he meets the 'real' Saskia. Saskia Hunt is a real thirteen year old girl, while Richie is only a pretend thirteen years old. The two Saskias quickly become firm friends. A friendship that survives Richie having to explain to Saskia about not actually being a girl. At this point Saskia is apparently so upset that the Voice that fiddled with Richie changes her as well, now there are two super girls. Despite the difference in age and even in gender, the two girls, Richie in his form as Saskia, remain best friends. Now the fun begins as Saskia Chandler has to learn how to be a girl. Almost the first thing that happens is a full formal evening event that sees her stuffed into a long frock and required to be a girl in front of a whole crowd of people. Quite apart from this crash course in being a young girl, Saskia Chandler finds that she and Saskia Hunt need to use their super powers to aid others as well as themselves. They never actually discover why they've been changed to be more than human, but get the occasional inkling as the Voice gets them to do things it can't apparently do for itself. This includes being shuttled around in time and space and saving the whole world - twice!
Liberty Option
Liberty Option
Machan, Tibor R.
¥63.67
The Liberty Option advances the idea that for compelling moral as well as practical reasons it is the free society - with the rule of law founded on the principles of private property rights, its complete respect for individual sovereignty and properly limited legal authorities - not one or another version of statism that serves justice best, is most prosperous and encourages the greatest measure of individual virtue on the part of the citizenry. The work shows why this is so and lays out some of the most crucial implications of the idea. While the book presents a principled approach to politics, it is firmly grounded in the best and most up to date understanding of human community life and history as well as many of its complications, challenges, adversities and prospects.
Right Road to Radical Freedom
Right Road to Radical Freedom
Machan, Tibor R.
¥63.67
This work focuses on the topic of freedom. The author starts with the old issue of free will - do we as individual human beings choose our conduct, at least partly independently, freely? He comes down on the side of libertarians who answer Yes, and scorns the compatibilism of philosophers like Daniel Dennett, who try to rescue some kind of freedom from a physically determined universe. From here he moves on to apply his belief in radical freedom to areas of life such as religion, politics, and morality, tackling subjects as diverse as taxation, private property, justice and the welfare state.

Goldstein, Jack
¥29.33
For as long as humans have lived on this earth, nature has done its very best to rid the planet of us. This book not only looks back at a number of times in recorded history where the future of our very existence was put in jeopardy, but also asks whether we could survive a resurgence of these pandemics... or even an entirely new as-yet undetected threat. From the plague of Justinian, through the Black Death and Spanish flu, to the 2015/16 Zika outbreak, the authors explore how each epidemic began, spread, and threatened to wipe us out. Although at times it may be a scary read, this fascinating book takes the reader on an unmissable journey through some of the darkest and most worrying threats to mankind.

WILLIAM BRIGHT was bright by name, but many thought he wasn't toobright by nature until William proved them all to be wrong. Hewasn't very popular with the girls either, although he was consideredto be rather handsome ...He was also tall and he was dark, so what wasmissing you might ask. . . and probably the answer was that William wasvery shy and found it very difficult to converse and mix with youngpeople of his own age. William adored his father, but the father diedat an early age when William was only six and he wore his father'swedding ring around his neck until he was old enough to wear it on thefourth finger of the left hand, swearing he would never remove the ringuntil he found someone that he could love as he had loved his dad.William's mother wasn't interested in the boy and considered him to betoo stupid to do anything more than the job he got when he left schoolat the age of fifteen. She had interests of her own which would not benormally classed as motherly and she states that William started tostutter when his father died and believes it was a great shock to himwhich brought this about.
