This book presents a comprehensive study of Oakeshott's conception of political activity. The author first examines Oakeshott in the contexts of liberal, conservative and Idealist thought, and then presents a detailed interpretation of the change in his conception of politics in the context of British postwar political thought. It is argued that Oakeshott's conception of political activity shifted from a near contempt of politics towards the applauding of politics as a deliberative and reflective activity. The development is disclosed by examining the change in his key concepts, such as authority and tradition. Accordingly, some rather unexpected aspects of Oakeshott's thought, such as his close relationship to the linguistic turn, appear. The author argues that although Oakeshott cannot exactly be classified as belonging to that group of political philosophers for whom politics represents a superior human activity, his later work presents an important and original view of politics as an art of contingency.

Sherlock Holmes and the Folk Tale Mysteries - Volume 2
Puhl, Gayle Lange
¥58.76
Jewel thefts, missing persons, even murder are all elements in the world of the great detective Sherlock Holmes. What connects the stories in this book is that the cases he and his biographer Dr. John H. Watson investigate are based on adventures beloved of childhood. In a novel twist to the usual Holmes pastiches, Mrs. Puhl has based her plots involving Mr. Sherlock Holmes on folk tales, nursery rhymes and other snippets of children's literature. She has brought them into the Victorian era and kept them true to the expectations for Holmesian stories. But these are not children's tales. There are no talking rabbits, no flying carpets or magic wands. There is not always a happy ending. They are all grounded in the logical world of Holmes and Watson. Two men are determined to prove in a race which of them is faster. A child is missing and presumed dead. Can Sherlock Holmes help heal the mother's broken heart? A baby is found in a basket at the foot of the seventeen steps to 221b Baker Street. Did an ancient legend lead to a modern-day murder?Join Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his biographer Dr. John H. Watson as they explore the unusual cases brought to them from the land of bedtime stories and wise adages. You may never feel quite the same again about children's literature.

Fully revised 2nd edition - The Investigating Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes Colloquium and donation of the third largest private collection of Sherlockiana in the world were supposed to produce a weekend of great publicity for tiny St. Benignus College in Erin, Ohio. But when theft and murder come to campus, college public relations director Jeff Cody finds himself knee-deep in Sherlockian suspects, besieged by an aggressive reporter he loves but no longer dates, and competing with his eccentric brother-in-law, Sebastian McCabe, to solve the crimes first. The mess worsens when Jeff and his ex-girlfriend, Lynda Teal, themselves fall under suspicion of murder - and with good reason, for they have something to hide. Mrs. Hudson is possibly the most famous landlady in literature. Presiding over the comings and goings at 221B Baker Street, she saw many clients, villains and Baker Street Irregulars during the tenancy of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. This series of columns, thoughts, recipes and memoirs are from a long-running column in the Sherlockian journal Canadian Holmes. In it the author, Wendy Heyman-Marsaw, puts herself in Mrs. Hudson's shoes, up and down the 17 steps, and recounts not only the time and era but the food, dining and eating habits of Victorian England. This book explores the meals Mrs. Hudson would have prepared and served her two famous lodgers, what food they would have had while on rail journeys or eaten at hotels around London or inns around England. You will also learn about Mrs. Hudson herself, her husband and even her views towards women's roles and rights in Victorian times. With many illustrations from the Strand Magazine, readers will get a rare peek inside Victorian life.

Richie is falling, he's certain to be killed as he hits the bottom of the quarry he's tumbled over the edge of. His life is saved by the intervention of a disembodied being he eventually comes to call a Guardian of Reality. But there's a snag. The voice gives him super powers, so he isn't hurt by the fall. Trouble is, it isn't super powers like Superman, it's super powers like Supergirl, which comes as a bit of a shock as you might imagine. Richie decides to put up with being a girl, having super powers does have the odd advantage. He calls himself Saskia and everything is fine - until he meets the 'real' Saskia. Saskia Hunt is a real thirteen year old girl, while Richie is only a pretend thirteen years old. The two Saskias quickly become firm friends. A friendship that survives Richie having to explain to Saskia about not actually being a girl. At this point Saskia is apparently so upset that the Voice that fiddled with Richie changes her as well, now there are two super girls. Despite the difference in age and even in gender, the two girls, Richie in his form as Saskia, remain best friends. Now the fun begins as Saskia Chandler has to learn how to be a girl. Almost the first thing that happens is a full formal evening event that sees her stuffed into a long frock and required to be a girl in front of a whole crowd of people. Quite apart from this crash course in being a young girl, Saskia Chandler finds that she and Saskia Hunt need to use their super powers to aid others as well as themselves. They never actually discover why they've been changed to be more than human, but get the occasional inkling as the Voice gets them to do things it can't apparently do for itself. This includes being shuttled around in time and space and saving the whole world - twice!
