KIRKUS REVIEW A U.S. Navy physician shares his secrets for a more successful life in this self-help work. Mathurin conceived of his debut book when he realized how critical checklists are in the worlds of naval aviation and medicine. Itemized lists, he says, help avoid flight mishaps and operating room errors, so he wondered, “Why not apply this same concept to people’s lives to help them achieve their highest potential?” That epiphany resulted in this book—a kind of instruction manual for living that breaks achievement into seven “checklist items”: “Goals,” “Take Action,” “Courage to Consistently Commit,” “Value Resources,” “Investing in Yourself and Others,” “Giving Back,” and “Create a Legacy of Service to Others.” An introductory section helpfully explains each of the core concepts, in brief, and these same blocks of text are repeated at the beginning of each of seven chapters. The items themselves are unlikely to be new to most readers, as many of the ideas are common in self-help literature (such as “Have the courage to go the extra mile with everything that you do, each and every time”). But the presentation of the material feels more novel, as the overarching checklist concept isn’t taken literally; the book’s merit derives from the idea that one can systematically address several broad areas in the quest for a fuller life. At the very least, this notion gives the book a highly focused structure that makes it easy for readers to navigate.? Unsurprisingly, given the author’s military and medical background, there’s a sense of logic and precision to this book. Each chapter’s content is uniformly positive and always emphasizes proactivity, but it’s also clear that the book isn’t intended to highlight step-by-step procedure. Instead, it offers a wide-ranging, general discussion of each list item, using examples and personal anecdotes to illustrate specific points. To that end, Mathurin writes from a very personal perspective—sharing, for example, how he grew up in poverty in Haiti—and he explains with some eloquence how he used the principles that he lays out in his book to “transform [his] life from famine to abundance.” He writes with a great deal of insight, as well, offering not only accounts of his own experiences, but also the wisdom of others, such as investor Warren Buffett and the late self-help authors Zig Ziglar and Napoleon Hill. Mathurin’s style often takes an inspirational tone, as he exudes a sense of confidence in his approach to life: “Success,” writes Mathurin, “is only ten percent intention and ninety percent action.” About leading others, he writes, “always strive to be the leader you would want to follow; strive to be the calm voice in the midst of the chaos, and—while you are at it—strive to be the change that you want to see.” Finally, Mathurin stresses that you can “lay the path to your legacy by focusing on giving back the acts of kindness you have received along the way.”? A book of noble, sincere, and expressive advice for living.

Hryhory Skovoroda is considered by many as the first great Slavic philosopher and poet. Written over a period stretching from the 1750s until 1785, his The Garden of Divine Songs is a unique collection of 30 poems, featuring a complex system of strophic structures and with only a few of the songs written in a traditional way. Skovoroda never repeats one and the same strophic structure; this being the case, his Garden of Divine Songs according to writer-scholar Valery Shevchuk functions as a “practical guide to the art of poetry”, exemplifying all the meters and strophic patterns that were possible in Ukrainian poetry of that time. The poet makes masterful use of the accomplishments of academic poetry; the so-called “songs of the world” are the most prominent poems in this collection. These songs are an expression of Skovoroda's views in poetic form, and many ideas from The Garden of Divine Songs, such as the search for happiness in the world in song 21, would later form the basis for some of Skovoroda’s philosophical treatises. Skovoroda’s originality, and his ability to approach the most cardinal problems of human existence, stem from his capacity to combine known motifs, borrowed from literary sources such as classical texts, the Bible, and ancient Ukrainian poetic works, with his own system of thinking that focuses on his philosophy of the heart. The complete poems of Skovoroda are appearing in their entirety here in English for the first time, accompanied by a guest introduction by prominent Ukrainian writer Valery Shevchuk. The Town Traveller is one of Gissing's novels which earned him more income during his lifetime than most of his other novels. The story is full of life and descriptive detail. It revolves around life of town traveller Gammon, just the sort of quarter-educated that Gissing usually despises.

Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters, from oldest to youngest: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. A romance, a quest, a family drama that validates virtue over wealth. The start of the story is set at Christmastime, where Jo, the second eldest of the March sisters, grumbles that Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents. The four girls discuss the upcoming holiday and sigh as they long for pretty things that they can't have because of money constraints

Romanul e captivant, bine scris, n ciuda unor efuziuni retorice prea lungi pe alocuri, care puteau fi scurtate. Un text elaborat de ctre un crturar, cu lecturi din Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Jung sau Dostoievski fcute n profunzime, temeinic. n consecin, e un roman n care simbolurile apar la tot pasul, incifrate n text, n tehnica unui modernism hermeneutic care nu poate fi scos din ecuaie (…). Strict tehnic, ne aflm n faa unui Bildungsroman construit pe un scenariu clasic, de iniiere: tnrul Matei (toate numele sunt luate din Biblie…) interiorizeaz sfietor, dramatic moartea prematur a tatlui su, David, pierdut ntr-un accident de main pe Valea Oltului, se afl n conflict deschis cu mama sa, Riri, femeie pragmatic, dar intrat n faza unui deficit de cldura uman, mascat prin nervozitate, i i fixeaz ntreaga afeciune pe fiina compensativ a bunicului, Grig, mort i el spre sfritul romanului, i pe aceea a profesorului universitar Semion Ruda, stilat, elevat, aristorcatic, un concitadin de ocazie i tat-surogat, cruia, n cele din urm, protagonistul romanului i datoreaz relansarea intelectuala – viitor student n filosofie – i formarea literar, ca romancier, talentul compensativ al scrisului descoperindu-i-l oarecum fr premeditare sau ndemnuri din afar, ca pe o efervescen intern a propriei sale fiine. Fiin?a respir? neconstr?ns? de nimic, supus? doar clipei, ?nc?nta?iei tranzitoriului. A?tept?rile sale sunt naiv-fabuloase, ?n continuitatea unei copil?rii care nu s-a epuizat, care-?i tr?ie?te intens uimirile, dezvolt?ndu-le fin imaginativ... O atare autoscopie fantezista este rodul unei virtuozit??i a simplit??ii. Coeziunea textului se produce ?n jurul acestei neputin?e de a accepta ordinea pragmatic?, meschin?ria, ?n numele unei candori funciare. George Gissing est un auteur anglais estimé, dont les livres ont cependant été peu traduits et, souvent, relativement peu vendus, y compris dans sa contrée d'origine. Son ?uvre, comme sa biographie, est restée marginale, comme la plupart des écrivains, dont il a régulièrement décrit l'existence dans ses romans. Pourtant, il entretenait et dans une certaine mesure, en tant que sujet d'études, de recherche, entretient toujours des liens privilégiés avec la France, où il a passé les dernières années de sa vie. Revitrans fait revivre par la traduction en langue fran?aise des auteurs oubliés ou en marge, dont l'oeuvre ne trouve pas sa place dans l'édition classique. Cette brève nouvelle de Gissing, qu'on peut interpréter comme une forme de danse macabre, est sa première expérience, dont les suites dépendront des capacités du traducteur et des éventuelles réactions des lecteurs.
