Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth. Pride and Prejudice retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of “most loved books”. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, selling over 20 million copies, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. In 2003, the BBC carried out a survey on books “The Big Read”, over three quarters of a million votes were received from the British public to find the “nation's best-loved novel” of all time, Pride and Prejudice ranks No. 2 in the lists of 200 books.

He is best known for his short stories and two widely read novels:The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. Along with Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe much of Hawthorne's work belongs to the subgenre of Dark Romanticism. Young Hawthorne was a contemporary of fellow transcendentalists Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott. Hawthorne was part of this prominent circle of Massachusetts writers and philosophers. The transcendentalists believed in the “inherent goodness of both people and nature.” Hawthorne's style “is like purity itself.” Hawthorne's highest regarded short stories include My Kinsman, Major Molineaux , Young Goodman Brown, Feathertop, and The Minister's Black Veil . For the record, Hawthorne died in his sleep in 1864 during a tour of the White Mountains in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

The Secret Garden is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was first published in its entirety in 1911. It is now one of Burnett's most popular novels, and is considered to be a classic of English children's literature. Several stage and film adaptations have been produced. This book brings together the three lonely children: Mary, who has no close family and is not fond of people; Colin, who is so full of hatred, self-pity and anger, and who is not even sure whether his father loves him, but is certain that he is going to die; and Dickon, who although constantly has a bright and sunny disposition, prefers the company of animals to people, until he meets Mary. The Secret Garden is charming and wonderfully written, full of the right amount of intrigue for children. It is considered to be the epitome of children’s literature, it is still read and loved by many children today, even though it’s over 100 years old.

A sentimental British favorite, The Wind in the Willows is a far more interesting book than its popular and often juvenile audience might suggest. It became established as the evergreen children's classic it is known as today. In 1908, Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England. He moved back to Cookham, Berkshire, where he had been brought up and spent his time by the River Thames doing much as the animal characters in his book do. He wrote down the bedtime stories he had been telling his son Alistair. In 1909, Theodore Roosevelt, then President of the United States, wrote to Grahame to tell him that he had “read it and reread it, and have come to accept the characters as old friends”. The novel was in its thirty-first printing when playwright A. A. Milne adapted a part of it for the stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929. In 2003, The Wind in the Willows was listed at No. 16 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
